Cuando instalamos S.O. nuevo siempre formateamos la particion en windows a NTFS en linux a ext3, ext 4 etc. Hemos dado por hecho que los programas y todos los archivos eran destruidos y no podemos recuperarlos. La realidad es distinta. Cuando eliminamos el archivo el enlace entre el index y el archivo desaparece. Nuestro sistema interpreta que el archivo no es necesitado y el espacio puede ser escrito con nueva información. Pero los archivos eliminados permanecen en nuestro sistema.
