Submodalities are description of structure of sensory perceptions through images, sounds, sensations, smells and tastes in content “words” to describe the meaning of experience.
We are codifying every bit of experience (internal or/and external) in our mind.
So for example bright future is filled with dazzling expectations, sweet sound is a feeling good, bitter experience doesn’t want to be remember etc.
Each channel (image, audio, kinesthetic, smell and taste) contain analog and/or digital distinction. Analog in which we can perceive gradual change as a resistors; and digital in which the change 0/1 is similar to switch.
Here I describe list of most common submodalities and later I will present two ways: How to change our emotions through changing the voice and visual representation.
Visual channel (we receive it with open eye or in our imagination).
Where is the visual representation? Point to it. Behind, front, top, bottom, left, right.
Is it moving like movie or is it still like photo?
What is the duration of what I see? Short, long (minutes)
What is the speed? As in life, slower, faster
What I see is panoramic or framed?
It’s in color or black&white?
The colors are muted or alive?
It isbright or dark?
What’s the contrast?
What’s the transparency?
How big is it? Life size or smaller or larger?
Are you associated or dissociated Where associated means we see our hands and ourselves as in real life. Dissociated means we see ourselves as in the movie.
What is the distance of representation from my eyes?
Is it in my hand range or is it further?
What is the angle of representation? Note also the shade.
In what direction moves the representation?
Can I see it clearly or is blurry?
Is it in two-dimensional or 3D?
Audio Channel (we receive with open ears or in our imagination)
Where is the location of sound?
From where the sound/voices are coming from?
Are they close or far?
Are they coming near or going further?
Who is saying this? Mom, Dad, I…?
Volume is high or low?
The sound is soft or abrasive?
Frequency is high or low?
What is the timbre?
Are here characteristic sounds/or voices for instance Donald Duck… ?
Quality. Studio. Hi-fi. Reverb, echo…
What is the duration of sound?
What is the tempo – speed of sound?
Repetition – how many times I repeat the word and/or phrase to get more intense?
Kinesthetic channel (we perceive through our skin, organs or sensation as equilibrium
Where is the location of feeling? On the skin, stomach, heart…
Where does it start, move and end?
What is the sequence of process?
Is it warm or cold?
The texture is smooth or rough?
The feeling is soft or hard?
The feeling is wet or dry?
What is the moisture?
The sensation feels: like waves traveling through your body, as needles, as vibration…?
The pressure is located at a point or is extended on the surface?
What is the weight? Is it heavy or light?
What is the pace? Increasing steadily, decreasing?
The feeling is permanent or intermittent?
Does it affect your breathing?
What is the facial expression?
What is the body position?
How do I move my eyes?
How do I gesticulate?
Channel of action (can be observed in conscious and unconscious state of mind)
Delivering and withdrawing.
Taking Hold and leave.
Embracing.
Feeling.
Modalities of taste (we perceive through our tongue or in our imagination).
Is it sweet or bitter?
Is it Sour?
Is it Salty?
Is it Hot?
Is it Bitter?
Modalities of smell (we perceive through the nose or in our imagination).
What is the intensity of smell?
From where it’s coming?
How sweet it smells?
How spicy it smells?
How fresh it smell?
How good it smells?
How bad it smells?
You can develop smell to Nth degree, and become Connoisseur.
Changing the inner critic’s voice. Think about what what you are saying to yourself. Remember Donald Duck movie and start to say the some things with Donald Duck’s voice. Now put the voice of Donald Duck in your head and repeat the some things over and over again until everything sounds funny. And again. And once more. This is it. Fantastic.
Changing the visual representation. Think about a problem that is really big. Now I ask that you imagine a big puma in front of you. Very large and hungry cat. Step inside the body of puma and see through it’s eyes, feel it’s power and energy. See the problem reducing itself in front of you. Then put big mountain behind this little problem and see that the problem begins to tremble in front of you. Imagine lightning and hear sound of thunder. Now convert the problem into small pink pill and eat it. Waaaaav. Thanks to Richard Bandler I am able to do this.
